Boris Kagarlitsky was arrested in Moscow on 25 July on charges by Russian security forces of 'justifying terrorism'.
He was taken to Syktyvkar in the north-eastern part of Russia and criminal proceedings were opened against him there. He faces
up to seven years imprisonment.
Kagarlitsky is a world-renowned sociologist, philosopher, university lecturer and pacifist. Over the years, he has played a central role in popular movements on an international level, for example participating in European meetings on nuclear disarmament already during the Soviet era. In recent years, he has participated in international meetings against NATO expansionism, as well as in those of networks for peace and global justice.
Last year he was declared a 'foreign agent' in Russia, probably for criticising the aggression of Ukraine on his YouTube channel. Today he is arrested on thesimply ridiculous charge of supporting terrorism.
Such a charge, when aimed at one of the most staunch supporters of cooperation between all social movements and all peoples of East and West, South and North, undermines joint efforts for world peace.
We call on the Russian authorities to immediately drop the charges and release Boris Kagarlitsky!
