Un Ponte Per has been present in north-east Syria since 2015, where an attempt at self-government based on the principles of democratic confederalism is underway. It initially coordinated the dispatch of humanitarian shipments destined for the affected population, and then structured its intervention to help rebuild the war-torn health system of the area, guaranteeing rights and support to the population, particularly after the advance of Daesh (Islamic State) in large parts of the country. Over the years, UPP has rehabilitated and rebuilt hospitals - including the one in Raqqa in 2018 - and opened clinics and health centres in the main camps for displaced people. It has strengthened support and protection for women and children, and developed a capacity-building programme for local municipalities, from health to proper waste disposal. UPP has been responding to the crisis affecting Syrian refugees throughout the region since 2012, with programmes of psychological support, protection, education and training in Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon.
