GLOSSARIO

THE WEIGHT OF WORDS

Let's give weight to the words we use, because every linguistic choice is a political choice.
Here is a small glossary to guide you on words you won't find on this site.

HELP, NEED, DEPENDENCE

We believe that respect for the dignity of people comes before anything else. For this reason, you will not find on our website any reference to concepts such as “poverty”, “weakness” or “need for help”, and any formula that contributes to victimizing and crushing into a condition of dependence the people we work with. Together with them we walk, with a view to equality and support.

OVEREXTENDED MALE

We believe in a language that is inclusive of all subjectivities, genders, identities and orientations. For this reason, on our site you will not find the overextended masculine (e.g. “activists”, “members”, “donors” used in a neutral way to also include women and non-cis-hetero-normed subjectivities). Instead, we have chosen to use the schwa (ə).

MIDDLE EAST

In line with our decolonial approach, we have chosen to avoid Eurocentric geo-political definitions that have an imperialist and colonial connotation, such as “Middle East” or “MENA Region” (Middle East North Africa). We have chosen to adopt the formula “Western Asia” and “WANA Region” (West Asia North Africa) to define the macro-regions of the world and the countries in which we operate.
