What are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files that sites visited by the user send to his terminal (usually to the browser), where they are stored and then transmitted to the same sites the next time the same user visits. In the course of browsing a site, the user may also receive on his terminal equipment cookies from different sites or web servers ("third-party" cookies); this happens because on the website visited there may be elements such as, for example, images, maps, sounds, specific links to web pages of other domains residing on servers other than the one on which the requested page is located. In other words, they are those cookies that are set by a website other than the one you are currently visiting. Cookies are used to perform computer authentication, session monitoring and storage of specific information about users accessing the server, and are usually present in the browser of each user in very large numbers. Certain operations could not be carried out without the use of cookies, which are therefore technically necessary in some cases: for example, access to home banking and the activities that can be carried out on one's current account online (viewing account statements, bank transfers, paying bills, etc.) would be much more complex to carry out and less secure without the presence of cookies that identify the user and maintain their identification within the session. Cookies can remain in the system for long periods of time and can also contain a unique identification code. This allows the sites that use them to keep track of the user's navigation within the site itself, for statistical or advertising purposes, i.e. to create a personalised profile of the user starting from the pages that the same has visited and then show him targeted advertising (so-called Behavioural Advertising).
