Another delivery of humanitarian aid - healthcare equipment, medicine, winter curtains and covers - reached the Turkish-Iraqi border of Ibrahim Khali/Zako on 4th December 2015.
The delivery was intended for the population of Rojava, a predominantly Kurdish area in northeast Syria which resisted the advance of Daesh (Islamic State) in the region.
The delivery, which was made possible by Italian Cooperation Division of the Italian Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAECI), left the UNHCR warehouse in Brindisi for transport to Dohuk, in the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan (KRG), where it was delivered to our field staff for distribution.
The total value of the delivery was 80,000 euro and it was made up of healthcare equipment, medicine, 70 winter curtains and 450 covers, enough to help more than 20,000 people.
The medicine will be given to the Rojava hospitals, in particular Qamishlo Hospital, and 15 health centres run by the Kurdish Red Crescent with our support, as well as in the town of Kobane, a city which symbolises resistance of Daesh.
The curtains and covers will be distributed in the Newroz and Roj refugee camps, which are now sheltering thousands of Yazidi IDPs who fled from Sinjar, and are still living in these precarious conditions.
This is the third humanitarian aid delivery in support of the people of Rojava, following those in May 2015 financed in collaboration between MAECI, the charitable wing of the Waldensian Table and Un Ponte Per…
Considering the challenges of getting into Syrian territory, these deliveries are extremely important for the coming winter. The curtains and covers will be especially useful per hundreds of IDPs living in Syria.
